What Operation “Spitting Nova” is, and why you should care

JEB-IS-FIRING-HIS-LAZUR-spitting-nova

Silly name, isn’t it – “Spitting Nova” – but what exactly is Mojang hiding behind that name, and should you care about it? Well, since you’re visiting this site, you most likely should care, since it will not only greatly change the way Minecraft works but also break all mods in order to make them finally properly work. This may all sound confusing at first, but read on and I’ll explain.

You’ve probably heard of the upcoming Mod API that will make modding for Minecraft easier and allow more people to get into mods for Minecraft, however a big step needs to be made before that can happen and that step includes completely reworking the code of Minecraft to make singleplayer run as a local server. This big step is Operation “Spitting Nova”. With the latest 12w18a snapshot, the Minecraft team has begun reworking Minecraft’s code to allow this.

Jeb said on the Mojang blog:

Important! This week’s snapshot is extra experimental!

This week we’ve started working on separating the server logic from the client. The purpose of this is both to make it easier for us to add features (since we don’t have to implement stuff “twice”), and also to make it possible for you to invite people to play on your local computer without setting up a server. In other words, more like how it works on Minecraft: Pocket Edition.

This move broke a lot of things, and it’s not just little things like some redstone contraptions breaking, this completely broke enchanting and even the End. But don’t worry, they will fix everything (you’re welcome to help) and implement the Mod API before this is released as an official update.  So what will this mean for the average user?

Operation Spitting Nova - Landscape

First of all, multiplayer will now be a lot easier to mod. Since even singleplayer runs through the server now and Mojang are adding several ways for servers to install data onto the client, all mods will support multiplayer. If you play SMP you know how much this means – this will completely revolutionize the way servers can operate allowing admins to create completely custom experiences for servers. Sure it will break all your favorite mods at first, but it will be worth it in the long run.

Secondly, this will be awesome for LAN parties. You can play in your own world, build at your leisure, and a friend can come over with his laptop, connect to your world and explore and help you build. Last, but not least, this means Minecraft will be much more stable. Without having to deal with two versions of the game, it will all work through one, meaning it will have better performance and stability.

What do you think of all this? Are you excited for the changes, or do you hate that they’re concentrating on and just want them to keep adding new features? Leave it all in the comment section below.

this is such a good idea, and i am very happy they are finnaly doing it, shure there will be bugs at first but what of it, we went through bugs in the alpha and beta of minecraft and we can do it again. :D

    Many Thanks,

    /spudpott

such a good idea… in the long run, it also means mods being updated around half the time right?

I was wondering if “spitting nova” would effect Multi-player mods as well as single player? If you have an answer, please reply.

    • LittleDinamit says:

Yes, like every update, this one will likely break Bukkit/Spout or whatever you have installed and all the plugins for it. However, it will allow plugin creators to use the official Mod API making it much easier to update plugins and mods in the future.

This is amazing. I’ve been wanting them to do something like this for a long time. Playing by yourself on Minecraft really isn’t that fun anymore (which is why there’s multiplayer), and mods just add to the already awesome features of Minecraft, and seeing that all mods from then on will also be for multiplayer: it’s just a dream come true. And I’ll never have to worry about setting up a server again. Plus, I’m positive that mods for Minecraft will never stop being made until the end of the world (which in that case I hope doesn’t happen in a while) But I do have one question: Why is it called “Operation Spitting Nova”?

  6. J-max04 says:

This will first, make minecraft too slow for me to play, and second, will cause me and everyone else making mods to have to start from scratch, which will delay the Everfrost, our massive new mod, for a looooooong time. Please fix this Jeb!

    • LittleDinamit says:

It will not make Minecraft too slow, it will make it faster, performance will be better. And yes, it will break all mods, but like I said it will be worth it in the long run.

To be honest, I’m happy they’re doing this, but since they’ve amassed quite a game here, they should have FAR more employees than they do. You know, to do the things such as focus on this, as well as adding other stunning items and uses for others, and another party to debug problems. I really hope they fix the major things such as multiplayer bugs like animals escaping their areas clearly big enough to sustain them in singleplayer, loads of other glitches, and all around lag. Anyways, I’ll step off the ol’ soapbox and head out. Adios!

  8. Wow says:

I really can’t wait for this! Finally i wont be stuck 1/2 versions behind waiting for the mods i want to be updated

i think they should: allow mods from before your version to work; to make modding similar to that of texture packs if not easier; create an in game wiki so you do not have to go out of fullscreen to download mods you have heard of; keep the META-INF file from canceling out mods; allow mods to be downloaded without having to close minecraft; make the X-Box version to have a sky dimension but no Nether; um…… i think i ran out of ideas… oh yeah and the NPC’s should act like actual NPCs instead of pigs that aren’t afraid of anything, meaning the NPCs can talk, and you can get quests from them. Oh, and there should be RPG and story modes, and also you can choose from Steve or other mobs as a character, and the mob characters spawn in their respective habitats, steve spawns in his usual wilderness, while Adventurer Villagers should spawn in villages, and there should be mobs that can’t be played as (the mobs that actually dont make sense as a character: enderdragon, pigs, wolves, cows, chickens, squid, creeper, mooshrooms, ocelots, and the other more passive mobs). Potions should replenish health instead of food, bananas should grow in jungle trees, bushes should drop berries; storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other storms should be included, more ores should be added (like so many people request), more monsters should be added, and saddles should be craftable. lighters (single use) should be crafted with two sticks, used to create a campfire by lighting a log with it to cook just food and used as a source of light, there also should be a Hypothermia feature where if you do not have a campfire+sleeping bag or another source of heat in a snow biome or at night (slower effect) you freeze up and slowly die (this should be shown with snow flakes, slower than death by water). This is a lot of stuff I came up with, I hope someone either makes this into a major mod or Notch/Jeb puts this in a future update… I don’t know how to mod, so please someone make this into a mod for me! Whoever makes it a good indicator would be Enhanced Minecraft, if that name is possible. Thanks people, I hope you guys read this.

I… it… how… you… just… it… okay, think, how would they make the technical things (allow mods from before your version to work; to make modding similar to that of texture packs if not easier; create an in game wiki so you do not have to go out of fullscreen to download mods you have heard of; keep the META-INF file from canceling out mods; allow mods to be downloaded without having to close minecraft) you posted possible. Mods for previous versions don’t work for current versions. The second one just doesn’t make sense… how would they do that? The downloading and installing without leaving the game are I think what they’re working on (the API). And the meta-inf… I’m not sure why it’s there (I don’t program either), but it needs to be there, and there’s no other way to keep it from conflicting I don’t think. And finally – why post it here? There’s a perfectly good official forum, why not just make a new topic there?

i like your ideas but lighters and sleeping bags i mean come on minecraft takes place in the mid evil to=imes not like today.

    • ShadonicX7543 says:

Honestly, that’s not going to happen. That will not be implemented into Minecraft, and I don’t think anyone will take time to do all of that modding. It sounds to me like you want to completely change Minecraft. :/ Mojang is not going to make Minecraft that much more realistic, ya know… Sorry. :(

WOW! This is going to be great! I’m so exited my head nearly exploded! (Good thing it didn’t because if it did I wouldn’t be able to play Minecraft! Well, really, anything!)

  11. William says:

Oh and, In the first picture I saw a figure of Herobrine or Steve. I’m not sure which one…

    • LittleDinamit says:

Good eye! I took the picture while doing the article about the Herobrine mod, and it was a nice landscape shot so I used it with this article instead. That is Herobrine. ;)

  12. Masterobbyfun says:

Just noticed that in the 1st pic in the distance Steve trying to climb hill lol

Does this mean that anybody can visit your world, so Minecraft will be merged together into a giant Multi-player?

  17. Quo says:

What about the guys who have *cracked* Minecraft? Will they still be able to play Minecraft, or will they have to suffer and play Minecraft 1.2.5? I ask because my brother is really looking forward to write-able books. But he doesn’t have the money or the ability to have a job. *age barrier*

I’m impressed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and engaging,
and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head.
The issue is an issue that too few people are speaking intelligently about.
I’m very happy that I found this in my search for something regarding this.

Got something to say? Go for it!
